4 Tips for Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions

new year's resolutions

With a brand new year comes the opportunity for a fresh start, making 2024 the perfect chance to start adopting new habits that can enhance your lifestyle and your well-being!

The start of the new year is traditionally when most people make their New Year’s resolutions, where they promise to resolve certain aspects of their life in order to keep up good practices, change personal traits for the better or reach some sort of lifestyle goal. However, these changes don’t magically happen overnight: New Year’s resolutions take time to progress into reality.

At Astral at Auburn, our senior living community in Auburn, IN, promotes an active and vibrant lifestyle for residents, and we encourage and support each individual in our community to achieve their goals and reach their full potential every day!

Why Set New Year’s Resolutions?

About 40% of Americans make resolutions each year, but how many people actually achieve those resolutions? Only 8%! Even though a large percentage of the population sets these powerful goals for the upcoming year, it can be challenging to maintain the momentum as the months go by.

So, how can you make sure you meet your New Year’s resolutions and achieve your future goals? Here are some helpful tips to make sure you’re able to create healthy habits and keep up the momentum all year.

1. Use the “Buddy System”

Working with other people is a powerful thing, and research has shown that people are more likely to work harder toward their goals if they share them with others. It’s a great way to hold yourself accountable, whether you want to enhance your fitness by working out regularly or de-clutter your space by gathering your family together to help.

As you sit down and come up, with your resolutions for the new year, find a way to involve your loved ones in each goal to help you keep track of your progress and accomplishments.

2. Start Small

The new year is always exciting with the promise of a clean slate and a fresh start. That being said, it’s tempting to start with a bang and want to make large changes in a short period of time. However, this isn’t necessarily the most realistic way to achieve your resolutions.

Try to set smaller goals for yourself over the next few months. It might help to get yourself a specific planner or calendar and write down benchmark dates to track your accomplishments. This way, you’re more likely to commit to a plan that involves small amounts of progress over a longer period of time without feeling overwhelmed or burnt out.

3. Be Specific

Many of us set broad New Year’s resolutions like “exercise more” or “spend more time with friends.” But what does that really mean, and how will you know if you’ve achieved it?

Instead, you should be detailed in your resolutions, such as “exercise 30 minutes a day” or “make plans with friends once a month.” This creates a measurable goal you can easily check off every day, week or month!

4. Write Down and Visualize Each Resolution

Many people are visual learners, and some are more likely to retain information by writing it down. The same goes for working towards a specific goal in the future! People are over 40% more likely to achieve something they want if they write down their goals and develop a detailed list.

If you’re more of a visual person, you can create your own “vision board” for your New Year’s resolutions by finding photos that relate to what you want to accomplish this year. A vision board can help you realize your dreams and goals by viewing a bigger picture of what you’re trying to reach, and by looking at it every day, you’ll be able to gain more inspiration.
